Our Story
Locally owned & operated in the Adelaide Hills.
Freshford Nurseries is a family owned business located in the Adelaide Hills, with nurseries at Kenton Valley & Cudlee Creek. The nursery is currently managed by brothers Ben and Dylan Freeman who have taken the reins from their father John Freeman. The Freeman family have successfully run Freshford Nurseries for over 40 years and with young families of their own it looks like the next generation will continue to do so for many more years to come.
We are proud that we contribute to making Adelaide and surrounding areas more green and beautiful with our trees. The environment is very important to us and we take our job seriously, aiming to line streets, parks, gardens, backyards and outdoor community areas with shady, colourful & established trees and shrubs. Greener cities have many benefits, including enhanced stormwater absorption, reduced heat, cleaner air, improved water quality, noise reduction & much more. Investing in sustainable solutions such as trees create a more beautiful and healthier place to live.
Our History
Deep history in horticulture, extensive knowledge and generations of industry experience create a solid foundation for Freshford Nurseries.
1917
Established
The Wicks family established “Freshford Nurseries” in 1917 at Highbury South Australia.
The business background began with fruit, nut and vines with the main supply to the pioneer settlements established after the war. Apart from supply of quality citrus, loquats, mulberries, persimmons, figs and general lines; the nursery was brought to fame through its development of nut trees, specializing in walnut varieties. Assisting in development of the Australian Walnut Industry, as well as overseas in Bhutan.
1983
New Ownership
In 1983 the business was taken over by John and Julie Freeman. John worked for the business prior to taking it over.
Since moving to its present locations in the Adelaide Hills the main focus has moved from fruit and nut trees towards native & exotic trees for wholesale supply. This includes selling to councils, developers & landscapers both locally and interstate.
The business expanded to include their 2 sons Ben and Dylan.

His friendly personality and dedication to the business comes across in all his interactions with customers. Ben is an active member of Treenet and has worked closely with SA Power networks and councils to help with species selection and other industry initiatives. He is committed to leading the way forward in Horticulture.
Dylan Freeman
Dylan is Production Manger, supervising staff and managing tree stock. He is very particular about attention to detail and quality control. With a sporting background playing football for the local Lobethal Tigers club, he knows how to lead a team. Don’t mistake his quiet personality, as he definitely gets the job done. His extensive knowledge of each individual species and what is in stock will impress you. You will probably speak to him direct if Ben is unavailable.
