Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis ‘Shademaster’ is a fast growing deciduous tree with attractive fine, lacy, dark emerald-green foliage and develops graceful ascending branches with a slight weeping habit. The flowers on this thornless tree are inconspicuous green racemes which are produced in spring. After flowering large brown legumes are produced and these tend to persist on the tree well into winter. Being a vigorous grower this tree is highly suitable as a shade tree in larger parks and properties, also as street trees. This popular cultivar is best grown in full sun and performs better in moist, deep, fertile soils but will tolerate a wide range of soil types including moderately saline soils, urban areas, coastal locations, air pollution, as well as some levels of drought and flooding; will tolerate poor drainage. Shademaster is relatively pest and disease free. As with most plants, Gleditsia is waterwise once established, also mulching is beneficial to retain moisture. In the early years an annual autumn pruning of the long ‘whippy’ branches will promote a strong framework while maintaining good shape as a feature tree. Gleditsia Shademaster will grow up to 15m tall and 8m wide.
